Beyond the Sparrow: Birding Walk & Spiritual Reflection
Join Marissa from The Art of Ecology for a faith-based foray into the world of birding with a birding workshop. Discover the many migratory birds that pass through Philadelphia and surrounding areas, visiting your community and utilizing the many trees, seeds, berries and feeders this winter. Consider God’s care for the birds, as described in the Bible, and God’s care for humans. Anyone interested in learning more about the birds in their area, how to get started birding or has an interest in the blend of scientific and natural phenomenon with spirituality is welcome!
What to Expect:
Marissa will begin with basic bird identification, where she will discuss ways to identify backyard birds, including feathers, colors, beak shape and songs. Then, we shall head outside for a birding walk, to learn how “to bird,” where to look and how to listen for distant songs and calls. We shall record our bird observations and upload them to eBird for scientists to use in conservation efforts.
As we talk about how scientists value birds as bioindicators of ecosystem health, we shall also discuss their importance to God and how even still, we are more valued by God than birds. There will be time for reflection on the birds observed, their habitats, their winter journey and your own journey with your faith. Nature journaling, discussion and prayer will round out the day.
