Downy and Hairy woodpeckers can be hard to distinguish between unless you see them side by side or can see the tail feathers. Downies are a smidgen smaller (and with shorter beaks too) than Hairies, but the best thing to look for are the black markings on the outer tail feathers (seen well on this female) that ID this bird as a Downy Woodpecker.

Back in the 1700s, a naturalist voyaged past Indonesia, where these orchids grow wild and as he looked far away thought there were swarms of moths, thus giving them their common name "Moth Orchid".

Despite the snow, the ice, and the general lack of living things, there can be so much to forage during the winter! Rosehips are particularly good after a frost and local conifers have lots to offer.

It's 3 degrees F right now (-16 C), and I am struggling. It's amazing though how animals have adapted to the cold and have ways to combat cold and wind chill, either by overwintering, changing their diets, migrating, or through various other methods.
