Springtime is for ephemerals! Jacobs Ladder is one of the dozens of native PA species of these fleeting spring wildflowers. Andrenid bees are Jacobs Ladder specialists and at least two types of moths utilize it as their host plants. Conserving our native plants is so important in maintaining biodiversity!

Happy Earth Day! It is estimated that over 1 billion people rally together on this day each year to make the world a greener, healthier place. While everyday should be Earth Day, I think it's so fantastic to see people banding together to achieve a common goal. The planet we live on is incredible!

There's not much better than being a bird enjoying a bath on a misty day! Birds bathe to remove debris, pests, and dust from their feathers and skin, as well as to cool off (although it was a cool enough day when this was observed), and to drink.

Macroinvertebrates (critters that you can see without a microscope that do NOT have a backbone) are out and about now that it's spring! These were collected from a pond, and by examining the species collected, we can assess water health. These critters are classified as Pollutant Tolerant, Semi-Tolerant, or Pollutant Sensitive, so having more of one group than another can give us a hint about their ecosystem!
